Running can be as simple as putting on some shorts, a t-shirt and a pair of running shoes to hit the streets and run until you can’t run no more. However, that won’t help you increase performance. Even Forest Gump, on his very, very long run, made the most of his layers and you should too.

So, why is layering so important in running? A number of factors contribute to the importance of layering from the conditions to the distance, it all plays a part. Our guide below will help you match our Fall-Winter 15 collection with the conditions you will face this winter season and ensure you have the clothing to get the best performance from your run.

As winter hits it’s important to keep your core body temperature up and three layers – the base layer, midlayer and outer layer – can ensure maximum performance.  The Odlo Blackcomb base layer range really comes into its own in cold conditions with its perfect thermal insulation providing a long-lasting barrier to the elements.

The midlayer acts as the perfect layer between the base layer and the outer layer, as an insulator from the cold. The Odlo midlayers are lightweight, allow freedom of movement and premium materials ensure your body is insulated.

An outer layer completes “The Art of Layering”. It acts as the front barrier to the elements, ensuring a cold wind chill will be kept out and any extreme weather conditions like snow or rain will not bring your body temperature down.

It’s important that your layers are versatile and suitable for all conditions. It may not always be necessary to combine all three layers, instead you may need to mix and match. You’ll find that the Odlo range allows you to do this whilst keeping a perfect combination of style, comfort and performance.

Our midlayers keep you warm, although an outer layer will ensure you are protected from anything the elements throw at you. Meanwhile, our base layers can be worn underneath either a midlayer or outer layer and will ensure you are well ventilated and moisture is wicked away quickly.

The ultimate advantage of layering is that it will help improve your performance, ensuring that you don’t have to worry about anything but yourself. Handling the conditions, handling your body temperature and perspiration and ensuring you are comfortable creates the perfect environment for you to perform to the best of your ability. Every layer has a job allowing you to focus on the job at hand, whether it be a weekly run or a competition.

At the end of the day, you want to look good running and that’s why we have ensured style goes hand-in-hand with performance. As Odlo ambassador and running coach Ingalena Heuck says, “I think it’s also important to feel good, perhaps even sexy. If you feel good you run better, so it’s very important.”
