We spoke to our ambassador and running coach Ingalena Heuck, as well as the Odlo London Run Club members from We Heart Living, to find out how they tackle winter running. With a few tweaks to your running routine, you will be running your way through the winter, whatever the weather.

“I love to run in winter. I think it’s really important to not stop running just because winter has started; it’s beautiful running in the snow. The most important thing for your performance is to stick to it and not to stop and restart again in spring!"
“To protect your body from injuries it’s very important to warm-up and start your run a little slower. Don’t just go from the warmth of the house and start running fast. Prepare yourself in the proper way so you can protect yourself from injuries and protect your immune system.”
Joanna Knight, We Heart Living co-founder:
“Weirdly, I actually like to go for longer runs in the winter! Because it’s not as hot, I feel like I can just keep on running. I layer up, get some hi-vis on and head out. For me, there’s nothing more satisfying than winter running.
“I tend to extend my warm-ups and cool-downs quite considerably. In the summer months I do a few cursory mobilising moves and head out, whereas in winter I spend more time warming up all my muscles and getting my body ready for the run to come. I really enjoy my post-run stretches in winter, again, I take more time over them and feel they make a real difference to how I feel the next day. As it’s colder I take more baths too and I find they take the edge of any longer-run soreness.”

“My running doesn't tend to change a lot in the winter, all year round I tend to run three to four times a week and typically hit the pavements after work. One thing that I do pay more attention to in winter is safety. Shorter days mean that I'm often running in the dark so I make sure that I use good quality lights and wear lots of hi-vis so that I'm seen and mix up my routes so I'm always running in well lit areas.
“Despite leading the run club warm-ups, warming up isn't something I'm great at! I do try and put a bit more effort in in the winter with lots of running on the spot in the lobby of my building before heading out!”
