Last weekend, Tesco Bank Tour O’ The Borders took place through the stunning scenery of Scotland. Two thousand cyclists took to the roads and streets in sunny (but slightly windy!) conditions in aid of raising money for two of the UK’s largest charities, the British Heart Foundation and Diabetes UK.
Open to riders all aged over 16, the event covered a 120km course with an elevation gain of 890m. The route began in the quaint town of Peebles and the ‘Touro’ route travelled mainly over quiet backroads with the occasional steep hill along the way. Participants were able to challenge themselves, whilst escaping from their everyday stresses to achieve something great.
Tour O’ The Borders was a great opportunity for Odlo to create a relationship with a worldwide recognised cycling event . With its heritage and enthusiastic following it stood out as a truly exciting opportunity to engage with consumers on the ground. What also appealed was the fact that the event was run by the same team that handled the successful Glentress 7/11.
Cycling has become the fastest selling sector in the Odlo UK market and as a brand, Odlo are excited to soon be launching a custom cycling program offer across the country.
James Clark, Country Manager of the UK who also took part in the race said “This year was our first year with the event and our first for producing customized shirts for the riders. It was a fantastic event and well organised. I was nervous for the start, but the community feel and vast abilities of riders all with the same goal made the event feel like a local community ride.
Even falling off my bike on the TALLA climb after running out of gears just made me determined to make a more graceful effort next year! One of the of marshals even offered me her own water and banana while I was waiting for one of my team mates. No doubt we will be back next year to support such a wonderful event. Congratulations to all the riders, helpers, organisers and sponsors for a great weekend.”
The crowds came out to support the riders as they passed and encourage them along the way before celebrating with them on Peebles’ Tweed Green in a weekend where cycling took centre stage in the Borders.
Among the many taking part for the first time was British Gold medallist, Paralympic cyclist and Paratriathlete Karen Darke MBE. Speaking after the event Karen said; “I had a fantastic experience taking part in Tesco Bank Tour O’ The Borders – I’d heard so many wonderful things about the event from friends who have ridden the event over the years and I was pleased to find everything said was true. Riding on a closed road route made the cycling all the more enjoyable as you could truly take in the spectacular Scottish Borders scenery. I’d encourage anyone who hasn’t taken part, to get signed up for next year!”
